What we know
A weathered headstone in the Trinity Church cemetery bearing the name PARKINGTON LANE, no birth date, no death date
The name doesn't appear in any New York colonial register, any church record, any genealogical roll we can search. There is no Parkington Lane because Parkington Lane is not a man — he is a marker. The headstone is a door. Beneath it, the chain ends. Mason's tradition: the gateway hides as a grave. Riley, surveying the cemetery, observes that he hates being right about everything always. We descend.
